Posture Correction at SchoolPosture correction seems to becoming a growing need in western society, but what steps can be taken to improve our posture?

Some say that poor posture is genetic, but I think this is used as an excuse. Instead, I put it down purely to the lifestyle that accompanies western living. There are lots of things about western habits that have a negative effect on posture. Western children start off life with good posture, but over the years bad habits are developed and that’s how I think people end up with painful backache. I think most people miss the connection because the process happens of a long period of time – normally years and years.

These bad habits are started at school. They hunch over badly designed school tables and chairs for hours on end, carry heavy books, and then spend all their spare time in front of the TV.

All of these habits play a part in the forming of bad posture.

Here are 3 tips that I think should form the basis for a national posture correction program for children:-

1. When working at their school desk they should sit on a wedge cushion so that the seat doesn’t slope backwards. For example:-

2. Minimise the weight of your school bag and carry it on both shoulders
3. Don’t become a Slouch Potato. Get at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise five times a week
